The tragic case of Kyle Clifford, a former soldier, has shocked the nation with its brutality and horrifying details. Clifford, 26, carried out a meticulously planned attack on his ex-girlfriend, Louise Hunt, her sister Hannah Hunt, and their mother Carol Hunt in their home in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on July 9, 2024.
The attack, fueled by rage over a recent breakup, ended in the gruesome deaths of all three women. The case, now being heard at Cambridge Crown Court, has unveiled the calculated and violent nature of Clifford’s actions, leaving many questioning the depths of human cruelty.
A Premeditated Act of Violence
The court heard that Kyle Clifford began plotting his attack just two days after Louise ended their 18-month relationship on June 26, 2024. Overcome with anger and unable to accept the rejection, he meticulously planned the massacre, gathering weapons and equipment to execute his crime.
In the days following the breakup, Clifford purchased a 30-metre rope, a crossbow, an air pistol, a 25cm butcher’s knife, two cans of petrol, and two rolls of duct tape.
According to prosecutor Alison Morgan KC, Clifford deliberately planned to restrain, rape, and murder Louise Hunt. His search history revealed that he had been looking up crossbows, as well as checking the day’s racing events to determine whether John Hunt, Louise’s father and a BBC racing commentator, would be at home.
On July 9, Clifford arrived at the Hunt family home, deceiving Carol Hunt by claiming he was returning Louise’s possessions. Moments after being let inside, he attacked Carol in a brutal knife assault, killing her almost instantly. He then waited for 90 minutes until Louise entered the house, unaware of her mother’s fate.
Rape and Murder in a Fit of Rage
Once inside, Louise was restrained with duct tape at her wrists and ankles. Prosecutors allege that Clifford raped her in a violent act of spite before ultimately killing her with a crossbow. The prosecution argues that this was a deliberate and sadistic crime, driven by Clifford’s inability to cope with rejection.
Although Kyle Clifford has admitted to the triple murder and false imprisonment of Louise, he denies the charge of rape. His defense claims that he and Louise last had consensual sex on June 23, days before the attack. However, forensic evidence and the sequence of events presented by the prosecution suggest otherwise.

Two hours after Louise was first attacked, a faint scream was heard, followed by a whooshing sound consistent with a crossbow being fired. Clifford had taken his time to enact his revenge, ensuring his actions inflicted maximum suffering. The calculated nature of his crimes is evident in his careful planning and execution.

When Hannah Hunt, Louise’s sister, arrived home from work, she found Kyle Clifford inside the house. Her shock and fear were evident in the doorbell footage, where she was heard saying, “Kyle, I swear to God.”
Realizing the danger, she quickly sent a desperate message to her partner, urging him to call the police immediately. Despite her attempts to seek help, she was also killed with the crossbow before authorities could intervene.
A History of Control and Aggression
Clifford’s history with Louise painted a troubling picture of manipulation and aggression. Louise, described by friends as a “caring, positive, and happy person,” had confided in them about Clifford’s aggressive behavior and nasty temper.
She had been planning to break up with him for some time, as she and her family found him disrespectful, rude, and arrogant. Hannah had also voiced concerns about Clifford’s attitude, hoping that Louise would leave him for good.
In addition to his abusive tendencies, Clifford had been involved with two other women during his relationship with Louise, hiding these affairs from her.

Louise had made a note on her phone after their breakup, listing his racist comments, his disdain for transgender people, and his belittling language. The breakup was final, and Louise had firmly rejected any attempts at reconciliation, which enraged Kyle Clifford and ultimately led to the tragic events of July 9.
After the attack, Clifford attempted to evade capture but was found the next day in Lavender Hill Cemetery, Enfield, having shot himself in the chest with a crossbow. He was hospitalized for ten weeks, during which he reportedly expressed remorse for his actions, calling them “atrocious.” Now paralyzed from the chest down, he faces justice in a trial that continues to uncover the shocking details of his crimes.
The case of Kyle Clifford is a horrifying reminder of the dangers of possessiveness, rage, and unchecked aggression. The loss of three innocent lives has left a void in their family and community, and as the trial unfolds, the Hunt family seeks justice for Louise, Hannah, and Carol.
