Hong Kong’s health authorities have cautioned against a potential surge in flu and COVID-19 cases this January, attributing the rise to cooler weather and seasonal trends. The city has begun taking measures to prevent an overwhelming strain on its healthcare system.
Current Situation: Gradual Rise in Cases
In December, Hong Kong observed a slight increase in flu and COVID-19 cases, signaling a potential surge in January, as stated by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP).
According to Dr. Kung Kin-hang, the principal medical and health officer at the center, while current case levels remain low, the signs of a gradual uptick are evident.
The latest data shows that 1.09% of respiratory specimens tested positive for influenza last week, compared to 0.52% in mid-November. Similarly, COVID-19 cases saw a rise, with 0.81% of specimens testing positive last week, up from 0.46% in November.

The increase coincides with the onset of cooler weather, which tends to activate viruses like influenza and COVID-19. Dr. Kin-hang noted that COVID-19 often sees waves every four to six months, with the last peak occurring in July. Given these cyclical patterns, health officials anticipate another wave in January, coinciding with the flu season.
Factors Driving the Surge
The cool weather is a significant factor in the expected rise of cases, as it creates favorable conditions for virus activity. Respiratory viruses, including influenza and COVID-19, thrive in lower temperatures, making them more transmissible.
Hong Kong’s flu season has also been impacted by the predominance of the H1 virus strain over the previously dominant H3 strain, which may contribute to a longer and more severe flu season.

Efforts to educate the public on preventive practices are also underway. Authorities are emphasizing hand hygiene, wearing masks in crowded areas, and avoiding unnecessary gatherings. The CHP continues to monitor the situation closely and plans to issue regular updates to keep the public informed.
