In a tragic case highlighting medical negligence, two doctors in Malaysia were ordered to pay six million ringgit (approximately Rs 11.42 crore) in damages after a woman, Punitha Mohan, bled to death following childbirth.

The incident occurred in 2019 at the Shan Clinic and Birth Centre in Klang, Selangor, where Punitha Mohan was admitted for the delivery of her second child. While the childbirth itself was successful, complications arose shortly after the placenta was removed, leading to severe bleeding.
Instead of ensuring the patient received urgent medical care, one of the doctors, Dr. Akambaram Ravi, left the hospital to get a drink, leaving the patient in the hands of inadequately trained nurses.
Justice Norliza Othman, who presided over the case, noted that the two doctors, identified as Dr. Ravi and Dr. Muniandi Shanmugam, failed to take appropriate action to stabilize the patient.

The nurses, who were not qualified by the Malaysian health ministry, attempted to stop the bleeding with cotton, but the lack of timely and adequate intervention proved fatal. - Rs 95 lakh for the pain and suffering Punitha endured.
- Rs 1.9 crore each for her two children.
- Rs 57 lakh each for her parents.
Justice Othman emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided had the medical staff acted with due diligence. The court criticized the doctors for failing to address the common risks associated with childbirth, such as postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, and placenta-related complications.
The judge stated that leaving the patient under the care of unqualified nurses while a doctor went out for a drink was an “unforgivable” act of neglect.
