A heart-wrenching tale of loss and survival unfolded in South Korea as a dog named Pudding found itself alone after losing its entire family in Jeju Air crash.
This tragic incident, which took place on December 29, claimed the lives of nearly 179 people, including nine members of Pudding’s family.
Amid this devastating tragedy, Pudding’s plight has touched hearts across the nation, highlighting both the emotional depth of animal companions and the compassion of those who stepped in to help.
A Tragic Loss for Pudding and Its Family
The Jeju Air flight, returning from Bangkok, Thailand, faced a catastrophic crash while attempting to land at Muan International Airport. The aircraft veered off the runway, struck a barrier, and erupted into flames, leading to one of the worst aviation disasters in recent history.
Among the 181 individuals onboard, only two crew members survived, while 179 passengers, including a family of nine, perished in the tragedy.

Pudding’s family, led by a 79-year-old patriarch identified only as A, was among the victims. A’s wife, daughter, and six-year-old granddaughter were also onboard, marking a heartbreaking loss for their community. The family’s cherished dog, Pudding, was left behind, unaware of the tragedy that had taken its loved ones away.
Pudding’s Struggle in the Aftermath
Following the accident, The Dog was seen wandering aimlessly in Yeonggwang county, South Jeolla province, where the family lived.
With no one to care for it, the dog lingered near the family’s home and frequented the village center, seemingly waiting for its owners to return. Locals noted the dog’s habit of sitting by parked vehicles, a silent vigil reflecting its longing and confusion.

Moved by its plight, the village residents provided food and care, though they knew the dog needed a permanent solution. The dog’s condition drew attention from the South Korean animal rights group Care, which decided to intervene.
Care described their encounter with The dog as profoundly emotional. The dog, initially sitting quietly outside the village hall, ran towards the group with apparent excitement, as if hoping they were its long-lost family. Recognizing the risks of allowing Pudding to remain unsupervised, the organization took action to secure its safety.
A New Beginning for Dog
Care transported the dog to Seoul, where the dog was admitted to a veterinary hospital for evaluation. Although the journey caused some unease, Pudding was described as calm and gentle throughout.
Initial health checks revealed the dog had ingested harmful foods, such as onions and chicken bones, possibly offered by well-meaning villagers unaware of their toxicity to dogs.
The organization has committed to ensuring Pudding’s well-being and finding a loving home. Their social media post explained their decision to take in the dog: “We determined that it was unsafe for the dog to roam the village without a caretaker. After contacting the grieving family at the funeral, we decided to protect the dog until a suitable guardian can be found.”

Pudding’s story is a poignant reminder of the emotional bonds animals share with their human companions. Its behavior—waiting near vehicles and running towards potential rescuers—speaks to the deep sense of loyalty and attachment dogs often exhibit.
The Compassion of the Community
While Pudding’s future is now in safe hands, the story also highlights the compassion and resilience of the local community. Villagers, grieving the loss of their neighbors, extended kindness to the dog, ensuring it did not go hungry or entirely unloved during its time of despair.
This act of collective care underscores the importance of community in times of tragedy. It reflects a shared understanding that even in the face of immense loss, acts of kindness can bring some measure of solace and hope.
Pudding’s rescue is a testament to human empathy and the enduring connection between humans and animals. As Care continues to look after the dog and seek a new home for it, Pudding’s story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the resilience that can emerge even amid profound loss.
