Last week, an unsettling incident took place at Drakensburg Secondary School, located in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, that has since drawn widespread condemnation and sparked inter-religious tensions.
A teacher at the school allegedly cut off a religious thread, known as a rakhi, from the wrist of a Hindu student, an act that has been deemed disrespectful, culturally insensitive, and an infringement on religious rights.
This controversial event has ignited calls for action from various religious groups, particularly the South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS), as well as human rights organizations that advocate for religious freedom and cultural respect.
The Incident: A Teacher’s Controversial Act
According to reports, the incident took place during a school day at Drakensburg Secondary School in the KwaZulu-Natal province.
The Hindu student, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly wearing a sacred thread on their wrist, a common religious symbol among Hindus. The teacher, however, removed it, citing the school’s policy against wearing any religious or cultural symbols while attending school.
The rakhi is a thread tied by family members or religious leaders during a significant cultural or religious event. It holds deep spiritual significance for Hindus, representing protection, blessings, and commitment to religious practice. The act of cutting it off was described as a violation of the student’s right to express their religious identity.
The teacher’s decision to remove the sacred thread without prior discussion or consent has sparked outrage among the Hindu community, particularly as they view it as an attack on their cultural and religious rights.

The South African Hindu Maha Sabha (SAHMS), which represents Hindu interests in South Africa, was quick to respond to the incident. They condemned the teacher’s actions and called for immediate intervention from the Ministry of Education.

In their official statement, the SAHMS described the act as “insensitive” and “irresponsible,” emphasizing that such actions contribute to religious intolerance. They also expressed concern that the teacher’s actions would lead to further victimization of the student, who reportedly did not feel comfortable coming forward due to fear of retaliation.
A Broader Debate: Religious Tolerance and School Policies
The incident has ignited a much larger conversation about the issue of religious tolerance and the need for clear guidelines on cultural and religious symbols in schools.
The South African Constitution, as well as the South African Charter of Religious Rights and Freedoms, ensures that individuals have the right to practice their religion freely, without fear of discrimination. This includes the right to wear religious symbols and attire, provided that it does not interfere with the primary function of educational institutions.
In the aftermath of the Drakensburg Secondary School incident, there has been a heated debate about the limits of religious expression in schools. Should schools be able to enforce policies that ban religious symbols, or should students have the freedom to express their religious identity while in school?
The case brings into focus the delicate balance between maintaining a neutral educational environment and respecting the diversity of religious practices and beliefs among students.
The SAHMS and various advocacy groups argue that educational institutions should respect the religious rights of their students. They point to previous legal rulings, such as the 2008 decision by South Africa’s Constitutional Court, which ruled in favor of a Hindu student who was not allowed to wear her nose ring at school.
The court emphasized that students should not be discriminated against on the basis of their cultural or religious practices. The ruling set a precedent for the protection of religious freedom in South African schools and was viewed as a landmark decision for upholding the rights of minority groups.
However, the provincial Department of Education, represented by spokesman Muzi Mahlambi, contends that the school should review its policies to ensure they align with constitutional provisions.
Mahlambi emphasized that South Africa’s Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and any school policy that conflicts with it should be revised. He called on the school to revise its code of conduct and to adopt a more inclusive approach that respects the religious and cultural diversity of students.
Furthermore, the KwaZulu-Natal province, where Drakensburg Secondary School is located, has a large Indian-origin population, many of whom follow the Hindu religion.
Therefore, cultural sensitivity is particularly important in this region. The Department of Education’s statement reflects the importance of upholding the right of students to practice their religion without fear of discrimination.
Religious Rights and the Role of Educators
The SAHMS has strongly demanded that education authorities take action against the teacher and the school for their failure to respect religious rights.
The organization has criticized the lack of clear guidelines and education on cultural sensitivity in South African schools, noting that many schools remain unsure about how to handle such situations. As a result, incidents like the one at Drakensburg Secondary School continue to occur, often without proper resolution.
Ashwin Trikamjee, the president of the SAHMS, shared his concern over the teacher’s actions and noted that both the principal and the chairman of the school’s governing body, who are both Hindus, defended the teacher’s actions during a phone call with him.
Trikamjee expressed surprise at their defensive stance, as they insisted that no religious discrimination was intended at the school. Despite their claims, no formal response has been provided in writing by the school, which further complicates the investigation.
Indian-origin South African CRL Commissioner Raj Govender also weighed in on the situation, urging that the school’s policies be revised to accommodate the cultural and religious practices of minority communities.
He condemned the teacher’s actions as a violation of her role as an educator, which is to remain neutral and to foster an environment of inclusivity and respect for all students.
Govender emphasized that South African schools must foster an atmosphere of respect for diverse religious beliefs, pointing out that teachers should never act in a way that undermines the cultural and religious identities of their students.
He further stressed the importance of educators receiving proper training on cultural sensitivity and religious tolerance to avoid future incidents of discrimination.
The provincial Department of Education has also intervened, instructing schools to review and revise their policies to ensure they do not conflict with the rights granted under South Africa’s Constitution.
The department has made it clear that no student should ever face punishment or discrimination because of their religious affiliation, and schools must promote cultural and religious tolerance.
Upholding Religious Freedom in Schools
The incident at Drakensburg Secondary School has highlighted the need for greater awareness and respect for cultural and religious diversity in South African schools. While schools must maintain an environment that fosters learning and discipline, it is equally important that they uphold the rights of students to express their religious identities.
The call for action from the SAHMS and various other organizations is a reminder of the importance of ensuring that students feel safe and respected in their educational environments.
In a multicultural society like South Africa, where a wide range of religious and cultural practices coexist, it is crucial that schools take proactive steps to avoid religious discrimination and to embrace diversity in all its forms.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the hope is that it will lead to a broader discussion about the policies governing religious symbols in schools, ultimately ensuring that students’ rights are protected while fostering an inclusive, tolerant, and respectful educational environment for all.
