Father kills 4-year-old son in a tragic and shocking incident that has left a community in mourning. On Christmas Eve, in the early hours of the morning, a Maryland father, Mark Jones, fatally shot his son, Jacobi Jones, following an argument with the child’s mother, Promyss Marcelle.
The horrifying event unfolded in the family’s home in Rosedale, Maryland, when little Jacobi simply asked his father to leave the bedroom where the argument was taking place. This simple request led to a devastating series of events, leaving one child dead and two others injured.
The Fatal Incident: Father kills 4-year-old son
On December 24th, around 6:35 a.m., Baltimore County police responded to a call regarding gunshot injuries at a residence in Rosedale. Inside the home, officers found Promyss Marcelle, her one-year-old daughter, and her son Jacobi suffering from gunshot wounds. The alleged shooter, Mark Jones, had also attempted to take his own life after the attack.
The argument began between Jones and Marcelle, escalating to the point where Jacobi, in his innocent attempt to defuse the tension, asked his father to leave the room. Instead of heeding his son’s plea, Jones retrieved a gun from his backpack, loaded it, and shot Jacobi in the head. The gunfire also struck Marcelle in the head and injured her one-year-old daughter in the shoulder.

The police discovered the firearm at the scene, registered in Jones’ name. Tragically, Jacobi was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital, while Marcelle and her daughter survived their injuries. Jones, who survived his self-inflicted gunshot wound, was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including first-degree murder, child abuse, and assault.
A History of Domestic Violence
This tragic incident was not an isolated event in the couple’s turbulent relationship. Marcelle later revealed that their five-year on-and-off relationship was marred by episodes of domestic violence.
In May 2023, Jones was charged with assault using a firearm but ultimately pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and received probation before judgment. Earlier that year, in January 2023, Marcelle had sought a temporary restraining order against him for domestic violence. However, for reasons unknown, the case was dismissed shortly after.

Marcelle’s relationship with Jones reflected the complexities many victims of domestic violence face. Despite the history of abuse, she admitted that her desire to create a stable family environment for her children kept her in the relationship.

“Even if you’re quote-unquote lonely, or you want to make your family, because some people don’t grow up with moms and dads, so they want to give their kid what they didn’t have, but it’s not worth it,” Marcelle said in an interview.
The tragic consequences of staying in a harmful relationship have now left Marcelle grappling with the unimaginable loss of her son.
A Community in Mourning
The heartbreaking story of Jacobi’s death has left the local community and beyond in shock. Promyss Marcelle described Jacobi as an excited and happy child, eagerly anticipating Christmas morning and the opportunity to open his presents. “He kept trying to open the presents, but I would tell him you’ve got to wait till Christmas,” she recalled.
In the wake of the tragedy, Marcelle has turned to her community for support, creating a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses for her son. By Monday morning, the campaign had raised over $36,000.
She expressed her grief and pain in a heartfelt statement on the fundraiser page: “The agony and pain I feel is something [I] wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Grieving the loss of my son has been the most unbearable thing I’ve ever had to deal with.”

Marcelle’s survival and her one-year-old daughter’s recovery from their injuries are bittersweet reminders of the lives spared amidst such senseless violence. Her story has sparked discussions on the importance of addressing domestic violence and supporting victims in leaving abusive relationships.
Lessons from a Tragedy
The tragedy serves as a harrowing reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the ripple effects it can have on innocent lives. Jacobi’s death, an incomprehensible act of violence, highlights the need for greater awareness, intervention, and support for victims of abuse.
For Marcelle, the loss of her son is a pain she will carry for the rest of her life. Her story, however, offers a powerful message to others in similar situations. “I know it’s [easier] said, because anybody can say, ‘Hey, leave,’ you know, but you leave when you’re ready. But take my story, now that I was forced to leave, basically, I don’t have my son,” she shared.
This tragedy underscores the importance of accessible resources for victims of domestic violence, from safe shelters to legal protections and counseling. It also highlights the need for communities to remain vigilant and supportive, ensuring that victims feel empowered to seek help without fear of judgment or retaliation.
As Marcelle and her daughter work toward healing, Jacobi’s memory serves as a call to action. His story must inspire efforts to prevent such devastating incidents in the future, ensuring that no other family endures this level of pain and loss.
