Seoul has launched its first nighttime self-driving taxi service, a groundbreaking initiative that marks a new chapter in Korea’s transportation industry. The service, which operates in the bustling Gangnam district, is the first of its kind in the country, offering passengers a unique and futuristic travel experience.
The introduction of the first nighttime self-driving taxi signals Seoul’s ambition to integrate autonomous vehicles into its urban infrastructure.
The Launch of Seoul’s First Nighttime Self-Driving Taxi
The nighttime self-driving taxi service will begin operations this week, starting on Thursday, in the busy streets of Gangnam. This 11.7-square-kilometer area in southern Seoul, known for its vibrant nightlife and dense traffic, will be the testing ground for the service.

The city plans to run the taxis from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., focusing on the hours when traffic is lighter but demand for transportation remains high.
Three self-driving taxis — the Korando Emotion, developed by KG Mobility — will be the first vehicles to offer this service. These autonomous taxis will cover central Gangnam and part of the neighboring Seocho district, transferring passengers across one of Seoul’s most dynamic regions.

How the Service Works
Passengers can summon the first nighttime self-driving taxi through the popular Kakao T app. A special “Seoul self-driving car” icon will be available, allowing users to book the autonomous vehicle if it is available in the area. Each taxi can accommodate up to three passengers and will come with a “test driver” onboard to ensure safety.
The autonomous taxis will operate on roads with four or more lanes, where their navigation systems can effectively manage the traffic. However, the driver will take over control in areas such as narrow residential streets and school zones, where extra caution is required. This hybrid model ensures the service is both safe and efficient.
The first nighttime self-driving taxi service will be free for passengers until the end of the year, from Monday to Friday. This free trial period allows the city to gather feedback from passengers and assess the system’s overall performance. It also helps the taxi industry adjust to this new form of transportation before it becomes a paid service.
In the first half of next year, Seoul plans to expand the first nighttime self-driving taxi service. This includes increasing the number of autonomous vehicles operating in Gangnam, based on public demand and feedback from the taxi industry.
As the service matures, it is expected to transition into a fee-based business, with a broader area of operation and more taxis available for passengers.

Seoul’s Vision for Autonomous Transportation
The launch of the first nighttime self-driving taxi in Seoul is part of the city’s broader vision to embrace autonomous technology. This service not only enhances convenience for late-night commuters but also positions Seoul as a leader in urban mobility innovation.
The city aims to integrate more self-driving vehicles into its transportation system, eventually offering autonomous buses and delivery vehicles as well.
As autonomous vehicle technology continues to improve, Seoul’s investment in self-driving taxis could transform its urban transport landscape, reducing congestion and enhancing public safety. The successful deployment of this service will serve as a model for other cities considering similar innovations in transportation.
The launch of Seoul’s first nighttime self-driving taxi service marks a significant milestone for the city and the country. With its introduction in the Gangnam district, this service is not only a technological achievement but also a practical solution for late-night commuters.
As Seoul looks toward expanding and enhancing this service, the first nighttime self-driving taxi has set the stage for a future where autonomous vehicles play a major role in public transportation.
