The trial of Kerri Pegg, a former prison governor at HMP Kirkham, has captured public attention due to allegations of misconduct and her alleged relationship with convicted drug dealer Anthony Saunderson.
Pegg, once regarded as a rising star in the prison service, is accused of breaching professional ethics by engaging in a relationship with the inmate, approving his temporary release, and accepting a luxury car from him.

Kerri Pegg, 42, was known for her rapid rise within the UK prison service, climbing the ranks from a graduate recruit to a governor in just six years. Described in court as “petite, blonde, and bubbly,” she was seen as ambitious and dedicated to her role.
However, prosecutors claim that she crossed professional boundaries by becoming personally involved with Anthony Saunderson, a drug gang boss who was serving a ten-year sentence for drug conspiracy and money laundering.
Saunderson, also known among criminal circles as “Jesse Pinkman,” a reference to the methamphetamine dealer from the TV series Breaking Bad, had been incarcerated since 2014.
In 2017, he was transferred to HMP Kirkham, a Category D open prison where Kerri Pegg was a governor. Prosecutors allege that she not only approved his temporary early release without proper authorization but also accepted a £12,000 Mercedes from him after his release.
The case took a significant turn when police raided Kerri Pegg’s home in Orrell, Wigan, in November 2019. Officers discovered a number of luxury items, including designer clothes, shoes, handbags, and jewelry, which prosecutors claim were beyond her financial means. Among the most damning pieces of evidence were a pair of size 10 Hugo Boss flip-flops and a toothbrush, both carrying Saunderson’s DNA.

In court, prosecutor Barbara Louise-Webster confronted Pegg about the flip-flops and the toothbrush found in her apartment, suggesting that Saunderson had been visiting her on multiple occasions.

When asked about the flip-flops, Pegg admitted they contained both her and Saunderson’s DNA but denied being in a relationship with him. When further pressed about their significantly larger size, as she wears a size four, Pegg remained firm in her denial.

Beyond the alleged personal relationship, the prosecution also presented evidence of financial irregularities. Pegg was accused of living beyond her means and failing to disclose three County Court Judgments (CCJs) against her, which made her financially vulnerable and, according to prosecutors, susceptible to corruption. Public officials are required to declare such financial difficulties as they pose a risk of external influence, yet Kerri Pegg did not report her debts.
The allegations suggest that her financial struggles may have played a role in her association with Saunderson. Investigators found that she had been in contact with him even after his release from prison. In July 2019, just two months after he was released, Saunderson was already involved in another drug conspiracy.
He used the encrypted EncroChat communication network, a system commonly utilized by organized crime gangs, to conduct illegal activities. It was only when police cracked EncroChat that his involvement in drug dealing was exposed.
Despite these revelations, Pegg insisted in court that she never viewed Saunderson as a former inmate but rather as a colleague. She argued that she had been involved in coordinating drug rehabilitation programs across six prisons in the North West of England, including a project called Breaking Alcohol and Drug Dependency (BADD).
At the time of her interactions with Saunderson, he had been contracted to work on this very project, and Pegg claimed that her engagement with him was strictly professional.
However, the prosecution challenged this explanation, questioning why Saunderson’s personal belongings, including a toothbrush, were found in her home. Pegg tearfully admitted that she had been “incredibly stupid” in her decision-making but maintained that she had done nothing wrong.
