India Can Be Constructive in Stopping Israeli Gaza Ops: Iran Envoy Iraj Elahi

India Can Be Constructive in Stopping Israeli Gaza Ops: Iran Envoy. Iranian ambassador to India, Iraj Elahi, emphasized on Saturday that India holds the potential to play a pivotal role in de-escalating the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Elahi stated that India’s longstanding ties with Israel could be leveraged to urge the Israeli government to halt its military operations in the region.

“We believe that India can play a constructive role despite India having good relations with Israel, so it can convince Israel to stop genocide in Gaza, to stop escalation in the region,” Elahi remarked.

Highlighting India’s growing global influence, the Iranian envoy pointed out that New Delhi, as an emerging power, bears a significant responsibility in fostering peace.

He also underscored India’s legacy as a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and its recent positioning as a voice for the Global South. These factors, according to Iraj Elahi, further enhance India’s credibility and its ability to mediate in the conflict.

Iraj Elahi further elaborated on the roadmap for peace, stressing that the core issue is the recognition of the Palestinian people’s rights. “The only solution is that the rights of Palestinians as a deprived nation, as an oppressed nation, be given to them.

The whole world, the United States, Arab states, and different countries should give and recognize their rights to have a state, their rights to have a homeland, their rights to have prosperity, and their rights to have sovereignty. This is the main solution. It’s clear,” he explained.

Differing Narratives of the October 7 Events

The Iranian ambassador’s remarks also touched upon the events of October 7, which involved an incursion by Hamas militants into Israeli territory, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and the taking of 250 hostages.

Iraj Elahi suggested that the violence on that day did not occur in isolation but is deeply rooted in the historical context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He asserted that the foundation of Israel and the subsequent displacement of Palestinians from their homeland have been longstanding sources of tension.

“We believe that Oct 7 did not happen suddenly; it has roots, and it has backgrounds. We should study the history of the region and the history of Israel—how it was established.

It was established in the lands of Palestinians, and one by one they occupied the houses of Palestinians, fired and burnt the farms, and obliged them to leave their homeland. In our discourse, Palestinians are defending and resisting their homeland, despite all the propaganda,” the Iranian envoy said.

Mounting Humanitarian Concerns

Following the October 7 attack, Israel launched a large-scale military offensive in Gaza, targeting Hamas units. However, the rapidly increasing civilian death toll, particularly among women and children, has triggered widespread humanitarian concerns.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, over 35,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the conflict began. The violence has also spread to other parts of the region, with Houthi rebels in Yemen targeting Israel and other countries in the Red Sea, and Israeli forces striking Hezbollah in Lebanon in response to perceived threats.

As the conflict continues to intensify, there is growing international pressure for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Numerous countries have also stressed the importance of pursuing a two-state solution as the only viable means to achieve long-term peace in the region.

In this context, Iraj Elahi reiterated that India’s influence and diplomatic stature place it in a unique position to help mediate and bring an end to the Israeli Gaza ops, which have led to the current humanitarian crisis. India, he suggests, could step forward as a neutral actor, promoting dialogue and de-escalation in the region.
