The tragic death of 51-year-old Kevin Taylor outside a nightclub in Walsall has left a community grieving and a family shattered. The incident, which unfolded in the early hours of December 7, 2023, has drawn public attention not only for the senseless violence involved but also for the heartbreaking loss of a man described as “kind and selfless.”
Kejuan Malone, the man responsible for Taylor’s death, has now been sentenced to more than five years in prison for manslaughter, following an emotional court hearing where the full impact of his actions was laid bare.
Kevin Taylor had been spending the evening socializing with strangers outside the Decode Lounge on Lichfield Street. He was not causing any harm but was instead moving between groups of people, trying to engage and be friendly. CCTV footage confirmed his calm demeanor in the moments before the fatal altercation.
Sadly, what began as a harmless encounter ended in a fatal assault that has devastated his loved ones and shocked the wider public. The court heard that Malone, 33, of Osprey Close in Hall Green, was standing with a group of friends when Taylor approached. Initially, the conversation appeared to be cordial.
However, things took a dark turn when Kevin Taylor reportedly gave Malone a light push—an act which the court later determined to be minimal provocation. Malone responded with disproportionate violence, punching Taylor five times, the final blow sending him crashing backwards and hitting his head on the pavement. That fall proved fatal.
A Senseless Act of Violence
Violence in public spaces has long been a concern, particularly when it emerges out of seemingly trivial interactions. In the case of Kevin Taylor, the physical altercation that led to his death lasted only moments but had irreversible consequences. The fatal encounter was caught on CCTV and clearly showed Kejuan Malone delivering multiple punches to a man who posed no significant threat.
The attack occurred just before 5am, after Taylor attempted to film the incident with his phone—perhaps as a means of self-defense or to document the hostility. His phone was knocked from his hand, and as he bent to retrieve it, Malone continued his assault. The final punch, described in court as “more forceful,” caused Taylor to fall and hit his head, knocking him unconscious.
What makes this tragedy even more appalling is Malone’s response after the attack. Rather than helping the man he had just assaulted, he fled the scene in a car with friends. Meanwhile, Kevin Taylor lay on the pavement, unconscious and vulnerable.

For several moments, no one came to his aid. Instead, bystanders were seen taking pictures and recording videos, further highlighting a disturbing trend of indifference and voyeurism in emergency situations.

Eventually, one member of the public tried to administer first aid, and paramedics were called. However, their efforts were in vain. Kevin Taylor was pronounced dead at 5.20am. The loss was felt not only by his family but also by all who knew him, as the true nature of the man emerged through heartfelt victim impact statements in court.
A Life Remembered
During the sentencing at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Kevin Taylor’s daughter, Chantel, bravely spoke about the man her father was. She described him as “kind and selfless,” someone who “never missed a chance to uplift others.” Taylor was a man of deep faith and had a positive outlook on life that inspired those around him. His loss has created a void in the lives of those who loved him—a void that no sentence could ever truly fill.

Chantel also revealed the painful reality her family faced in the aftermath of his death. Financial constraints meant they had to seek help just to return Taylor’s body to Zimbabwe for burial. It was a heartbreaking detail that underscored not only the emotional toll of the tragedy but also the logistical and economic burden it placed on the grieving family.
Her voice trembled as she recounted the impact her father’s violent death has had on their lives. “Every day is a reminder of what we have lost,” she told the court. Her words painted a vivid picture of a man whose generosity and warmth touched many, and whose absence will be felt for years to come.
Justice Delivered, But Questions Remain
Judge Michael Chambers KC sentenced Kejuan Malone to five years and four months in prison. In delivering the sentence, he acknowledged Malone’s early guilty plea and apparent remorse. However, the judge made it clear that Malone’s actions were inexcusable, particularly given Taylor’s visible vulnerability at the time.
“This wasn’t a one-punch manslaughter,” the judge emphasized. “It was a sustained assault in a public place.” He noted that Taylor had consumed alcohol, as he was entitled to do, and was behaving lawfully and sociably. The gentle push that triggered Malone’s aggression was deemed insufficient to justify the subsequent violence.

Kejuan Malone’s conduct in the aftermath of the assault was also criticized. The judge pointed out that instead of helping Taylor, Malone chose to flee the scene, leaving the unconscious man to the mercy of strangers. This callousness weighed heavily in the court’s deliberations and shaped the final sentence.
The judge’s remarks also served as a broader commentary on the dangers of street violence and the responsibility each person carries when confronted with provocation or disagreement. A minor push escalated into a fatal encounter, transforming a festive evening into a nightmare for one family.
For many, the sentence of five years and four months may feel inadequate given the irreversible loss of life. Questions about the adequacy of manslaughter sentences and the need for stronger deterrents in cases of street violence are likely to follow. Yet, within the bounds of the law, the judge applied the appropriate considerations—early guilty plea, remorse, and absence of premeditation.
Still, it is difficult for Taylor’s family and the community to find true closure. No jail term can undo what has happened. The father, friend, and kind-hearted man they knew is gone, taken away in an act of impulsive violence that never should have occurred.
The community in Walsall and beyond has been left to reflect on the fragility of life and the urgent need to confront the culture of aggression that too often turns minor conflicts into tragedies. Kevin Taylor’s death is a stark reminder of the human cost of violence, and a call to reevaluate how society responds to conflict, both in the moment and in its aftermath.
