The shocking revelation of a prison officer engaging in an inappropriate relationship with an inmate has rocked HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire. Toni Cole, a 29-year-old officer, was sentenced to 12 months in prison after admitting to misconduct in a public office.
Her relationship with the 28-year-old prisoner, which involved thousands of messages and intimate encounters, raised serious concerns about security and professionalism within the prison system.
The Inappropriate Relationship and Its Discovery
Toni Cole’s relationship with the prisoner was discovered after an internal investigation was launched at HMP Five Wells. Over a period of five months, she exchanged 4,431 texts and calls with the inmate, many of which were described as “sexualised or flirtatious” in nature. Among these messages, police found evidence of a photograph of underwear that Cole had sent to the prisoner.
The inappropriate relationship came to light during a meeting on January 25, 2023, which was initially arranged to discuss an unauthorized overtime shift that Cole had worked two days earlier.
During the investigation, CCTV footage from the shift revealed the inmate with his arm around Cole, raising suspicions about the nature of their interactions. This discovery led to her subsequent arrest and further scrutiny of her conduct.

Authorities seized Cole’s Samsung S22 mobile phone from her locker, which provided additional evidence of her misconduct. Investigators found that at least 18 video calls had taken place between her and the prisoner, and messages dating from September 2022 to January 2023 further confirmed their inappropriate relationship.
Consequences and Sentencing
Upon her arrest and subsequent trial, Toni Cole pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office. At Northampton Crown Court on February 13, she was sentenced to 12 months in prison and ordered to pay a £187 surcharge. Her conviction highlights the serious consequences of engaging in unethical conduct within the prison system.

During the investigation, it was also revealed that Cole had sat on the inmate’s lap and even promised to inform him if his cell was going to be searched by her colleagues. Such behavior not only undermined the integrity of her role but also posed a significant risk to the safety and security of the prison.

Detective Inspector Richard Cornell from the East Midland Special Operations Unit’s Regional Prison Intelligence Unit stated that Cole was fully aware of the inappropriateness of her actions. He emphasized that her behavior not only endangered her own position but also compromised the safety of her colleagues and other inmates.
Impact on the Prison System and Public Trust
The case of Toni Cole serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with working in a position of authority. Prisons operate on strict discipline and trust, and breaches such as this threaten the stability of the entire system.
Cole’s actions have cast a shadow over the hardworking prison staff who uphold their duties with integrity. Detective Inspector Cornell reassured that the majority of prison officers adhere to the highest standards, and this case serves as a warning that inappropriate relationships will be dealt with severely under the law.
The incident at HMP Five Wells raises broader concerns about the screening and supervision of prison officers. Maintaining professional boundaries is critical, and this case highlights the need for stringent oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As Cole begins her prison sentence, her case will likely serve as a cautionary tale for others in positions of power. It reinforces the importance of ethical conduct and adherence to professional standards within the criminal justice system.
The impact of her actions will not only affect her own life but will also serve as a lesson on the repercussions of breaking the trust placed in those who hold positions of responsibility.
