Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently made a sweeping announcement regarding Turkey’s relations with Israel, declaring a complete severance of all diplomatic and economic ties. The decision marks a significant shift, signaling Erdogan’s firm stance on the conflict in Gaza and his unwavering support for Palestine.
Turkish President made the statement during his return from a diplomatic tour in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan, where he highlighted Turkey’s growing role in advocating for Palestinian rights on the international stage. This announcement follows months of tension and a gradual decline in diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel, rooted in Turkey’s strong opposition to Israel’s policies in Gaza.
Turkey’s Diplomatic and Economic Break with Israel
Erdogan’s statement underscores a decisive move in Turkish foreign policy, severing formal interactions with Israel and halting future development of bilateral relations. Turkey had already implemented a trade embargo on Israel earlier this year, aiming to curb economic cooperation in response to the escalating violence in Gaza.
Despite these measures, Turkey maintained its diplomatic missions in Tel Aviv, and both countries’ embassies continued their operations, albeit with limited communication. With Turkish President’s latest statement, however, it is clear that Turkey is shifting toward a complete diplomatic freeze with Israel.
This decision stems from longstanding grievances within Turkey regarding Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, which have intensified since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel and the subsequent military conflict.

As the situation escalated, Erdogan’s government faced mounting pressure from the Turkish public, especially following the local elections, where voters expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s perceived lack of action against Israel.

Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) took a more pronounced stance on Gaza in response, ultimately leading to the formal severance of relations with Israel.
Erdogan’s Efforts to Hold Israel Accountable for Actions in Gaza
Beyond halting diplomatic ties, Erdogan has actively pursued international channels to hold Israel accountable for what he and other nations view as humanitarian violations in Gaza. Speaking passionately about Israel’s actions, Erdogan accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “genocide” in Gaza, echoing sentiments expressed by international human rights organizations.
Turkey has since joined an ongoing genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), a move that aligns with Erdogan’s vocal support for Palestinian sovereignty and human rights.
Erdogan has also called for a global arms embargo against Israel, mobilizing the support of 52 countries and two international organizations. In early November, Turkey formally submitted a proposal to the United Nations Security Council and Secretary-General, requesting international action to halt the shipment of weapons and ammunition to Israel.

This arms embargo initiative gained further momentum during Erdogan’s recent summit in Riyadh, where Turkish officials secured backing from Arab League members and other regional organizations. By leading these efforts, Turkey aims to exert international pressure on Israel and encourage other countries to reconsider their defense partnerships with Tel Aviv.
Rising Public Pressure and Turkey’s Internal Challenges
The decision to cut ties with Israel also reflects Erdogan’s response to growing domestic pressure and criticism from opposition parties. For months, Turkish citizens have called for stricter measures against Israel, especially as trade continued indirectly through third-party countries.
Erdogan’s ruling AKP faced backlash from opposition figures who argued that his administration’s policies were ineffective and insufficient in supporting Gaza. The president’s recent actions aim to demonstrate a more assertive stance that aligns with Turkish public sentiment, positioning Turkey as a prominent defender of Palestinian rights in the international arena.
However, Erdogan’s actions raise questions about Turkey’s role in regional diplomacy and its future relations with Western allies. While Erdogan’s stance resonates strongly with many in Turkey and the wider Middle East, the move could complicate Turkey’s relationships with countries that continue to support Israel.
As Turkey intensifies its criticism of Israel, it may encounter increased challenges in balancing its strategic alliances with Western nations while championing the Palestinian cause.
