Santorini, one of Greece’s most famous and picturesque islands, has been hit by a relentless series of earthquakes, forcing thousands to evacuate. Over the past few days, the island has experienced an unprecedented level of seismic activity, with more than 300 tremors recorded.
This has led to widespread fear among residents and authorities, prompting swift measures to ensure public safety. As scientists monitor the situation closely, concerns about a larger earthquake continue to rise.
Thousands Flee Amid Growing Seismic Threat
The Greek authorities have confirmed that over 11,000 people have left Santorini in response to the earthquake swarm. Among them, 7,000 departed by ferry, while another 4,000 boarded emergency flights arranged by Aegean Airlines following a government request.
Although Santorini is a world-famous tourist destination, the majority of evacuees at this time were local residents and seasonal workers, as it is currently the low season for tourism.
Despite no significant structural damage being reported, the fear of a larger earthquake has gripped the island. The strongest recorded tremor so far was a magnitude 5 earthquake on Tuesday, but scientists warn that an even stronger one, potentially reaching magnitude 6 or higher, cannot be ruled out.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has urged the public to remain calm, but authorities are taking no chances. Schools have been closed, and access to certain coastal areas, including the Old Port of Fira, Ammoudi, Armeni, and Korfos Thirassias, has been restricted. Officials are also advising people to avoid abandoned buildings and landslide-prone areas.

The Greek government has mobilized additional emergency resources, including 51 firefighters, nine vehicles, a fire department helicopter, and aerial rescue teams.

The response has extended beyond Santorini, with emergency personnel being deployed to nearby islands such as Amorgos, Ios, Astypalaia, and Anafi, where seismic activity has also been detected.
