Australian Woman Loses $780,000 to scammers while searching for love online. Annette Ford, a 57-year-old woman from Perth, has lost her life savings in two separate online scams, leaving her homeless and financially ruined.
She had turned to online dating in search of companionship after her 33-year-long marriage ended in 2018, but instead of finding love, she fell victim to heartless scammers who manipulated her emotions and drained her bank account.
Now, couch-surfing in Western Australia and hoping for affordable housing, she warns others about the dangers of online scams that prey on vulnerable individuals looking for love.
The First Scam: A Romance That Cost $300,000
After her marriage ended, Annette Ford decided to try online dating, hoping to rebuild her life. She joined a dating platform called “Plenty of Fish” and soon connected with a man named ‘William.’
Over several months, their conversations grew deeper, and she felt a genuine emotional connection. William claimed to be working on a project in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and soon after, he began to ask for financial help.
His first request was for $5000, claiming that he had been mugged outside his workplace in Kuala Lumpur, and all his cards and wallet had been stolen.
Concerned for his safety, Annette Ford agreed to send the money, believing she was helping a man in distress. Soon after, William told her he was hospitalized and needed financial assistance to cover medical bills. Again, she transferred money, this time paying an Australian doctor.
As their relationship continued, the financial demands escalated. William claimed he could not pay for his hotel stay or compensate his workers due to the loss of his cards. Each time, Annette Ford, convinced of his sincerity, sent him more money.

By the time she realized she had been deceived, she had lost $300,000, which came from her self-managed super fund. She reported the case to the Australian Federal Police, but she never received any updates on the investigation.

The emotional toll of this betrayal was immense. Annette Ford was devastated, not only by the financial loss but also by the emotional manipulation that made her believe she had found a genuine romantic partner. She was left heartbroken, with no financial security, and struggling to come to terms with the fact that the man she had trusted never truly existed.
The Second Scam: Bitcoin and a Fake FBI Investigation
After losing her savings in the first scam, Annette Ford took time to recover emotionally and financially. However, in 2022, four years later, she encountered another scammer—this time through Facebook.
A man named ‘Nelson’ initiated contact, claiming to live in Amsterdam. Their conversations started casually but soon turned into something more personal. Nelson convinced Ford that he had strong connections and even claimed to have a friend in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who needed financial assistance.
Initially skeptical, Annette Ford refused to send money. However, Nelson was persistent. He convinced her to receive money in her account and deposit it into a Bitcoin ATM for him.

Thinking she was merely helping with a transaction, Ford complied. What she did not realize was that her account was being used for fraudulent activities, and large sums of money were flowing in and out of it without her full awareness.
By the time she discovered the deception, it was too late. Another $280,000 had vanished from her account. This second financial disaster left her completely broke, with no savings and nowhere to live. She had lost everything—her home, her retirement savings, and any sense of financial security she once had.
Annette Ford now warns others that online scammers can be highly sophisticated. They manipulate emotions, build trust over time, and use clever tactics to exploit victims financially. Even after experiencing one scam, she found herself falling for another, proving that these fraudsters are relentless in their pursuit of vulnerable individuals.
The Aftermath: Homelessness and a Warning to Others
With no money left, Annette Ford was forced into homelessness. She now moves from one place to another, couch-surfing and relying on the kindness of others for a place to stay. She is trying to secure affordable housing in a retirement village, but the financial devastation she has suffered makes her future uncertain.
Ford’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of online dating scams. She urges people to be vigilant and skeptical when communicating with strangers online.
According to her, scammers know exactly what to say to manipulate their victims, creating a false sense of intimacy and trust. “They say all the right things, they sweep you off your feet, but they’re going to take your money and leave you broke,” she warned.

Her case is not unique. Online romance scams have become increasingly common, with criminals using fake identities to lure victims into sending money. In many cases, these scams target individuals who are emotionally vulnerable, such as those who have recently ended long-term relationships.
Ford hopes that by sharing her experience, she can prevent others from falling into the same trap. She emphasizes that even the most intelligent and cautious people can be deceived when emotions are involved. Scammers operate with sophisticated techniques, making it difficult for victims to recognize the red flags until it is too late.
As online dating continues to grow in popularity, so does the risk of encountering fraudulent individuals. Authorities worldwide urge people to be cautious, verify identities before sending money, and report any suspicious activities.
Unfortunately, for victims like Annette Ford, these warnings come too late. But by speaking out, she hopes to raise awareness and protect others from experiencing the same devastating fate.
let’s enjoy few years on earth with peace and happiness….✍🏼🙏
