Eddy Scott, a British volunteer medic, suffered life-changing injuries while evacuating civilians in one of Ukraine’s most dangerous warzones.
Despite the immense personal loss of his left arm and leg due to a Russian drone attack, he remains steadfast in his commitment to helping Ukraine and its people. His story is not only one of survival but also of resilience, courage, and an unwavering dedication to the cause he believes in.
A Mission That Came at a High Cost
Eddy Scott’s journey to Ukraine was driven by a deep-seated desire to help. Originally from Dorset, England, he grew up in a farming family and attended the prestigious Sherborne private school.
Instead of taking the traditional university route, he pursued his passion for sailing. However, his interest in Ukraine began after watching documentaries about the ongoing conflict and following the social media accounts of military and civilian volunteers.
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Scott felt compelled to act. He purchased a four-wheel-drive vehicle and traveled to Ukraine, where he worked with various humanitarian aid groups.
His primary responsibilities included transporting essential supplies such as food, water, and medical equipment to civilians in high-risk areas. He also assisted in evacuating people stranded in war-torn regions where regular transportation services were unavailable.
On January 30, 2024, Scott was driving through the northwestern part of Pokrovsk in a clearly marked humanitarian aid vehicle belonging to Base UA. The car, which was non-military and lacked any electronic drone-jamming antennas, was moving at a slow speed when a Russian drone targeted it. Scott recalled hearing the drone about 30 seconds before impact, making it clear that the attack was deliberate.
When the explosion occurred, shrapnel tore through the vehicle, instantly severing his left arm and leg. Despite the excruciating pain and severe blood loss, he remained conscious.

His colleague, also injured, managed to provide first aid and get him into an ambulance that transported him to a small medical facility west of Pokrovsk before transferring him to a proper hospital in Dnipro. There, he received six liters of Ukrainian blood, a fact he later joked about, saying, “I’m Ukrainian now.”
Life After Devastating Injuries
Scott’s injuries were life-altering but not life-ending. After initial treatments in Dnipro, he was moved to a hospital in Kyiv, where he continued his recovery.
Despite the intense pain, including phantom limb sensations that felt like a “hot knife” running along his missing limbs, he remained remarkably composed. His mindset was clear: his injuries might have changed his life, but they would not define or limit his future.
The attack that nearly killed him only strengthened his resolve to support Ukraine. He firmly believes that his story can be a powerful tool to highlight the atrocities committed by Russian forces.
“Look at what happened to me—this happens to civilians in Ukraine all the time,” he said, emphasizing that such attacks are not accidents but deliberate war crimes.
Instead of returning to the UK, Scott chose to stay in Ukraine. A charitable organization, the R.T. Weatherman Foundation, committed to covering his medical expenses, including the complex process of fitting him with a prosthetic arm and leg.
Additionally, he became eligible for benefits provided to both Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian wounded war veterans. Through fundraising efforts, significant amounts have been donated to support his treatment and to help build a home in Ukraine that will be adapted to his needs as a double amputee.
For Scott, leaving Ukraine was never an option. His bond with the country and its people had grown too strong. He had already decided that Ukraine was his home long before the attack, and the outpouring of support from his Ukrainian friends only reinforced that decision.
A Future Dedicated to Ukraine
Scott’s mission has taken a new direction. While he can no longer physically assist in evacuating people from frontlines, he now has a larger platform to advocate for Ukraine and its war victims.
His goal is to raise awareness about the thousands of civilians and soldiers who have lost limbs in the conflict. By sharing his experience, he hopes to draw attention to the long-term consequences of Russia’s aggression and the urgent need for continued international support.
He also aims to contribute in other meaningful ways. Having experienced firsthand the challenges of being an amputee in a war-torn country, he wants to help establish better support systems for others in similar situations. This includes pushing for improved medical care, rehabilitation services, and prosthetic access for wounded Ukrainians.
Reflecting on his journey, Scott insists that he has no regrets. “It’s cost me an arm and a leg, but I think it’s a pretty good price to pay,” he said. His unwavering commitment to Ukraine remains unchanged, if not stronger than before.
Despite the risks he faced and the price he paid, he still considers himself fortunate to have the opportunity to continue helping Ukraine. “I love Ukraine, and I’ve been given a future here,” he stated.
“Yeah, it’s different from what I imagined it would be, but I’ve suddenly got a very real and tangible future here; an opportunity to continue to help Ukraine, a chance to build my own life here. Ukraine and its people deserve a future in freedom, and I want to live it with them.”
