A New Beginning and an Unexpected Challenge
Following his rescue, Trooper’s story quickly spread across social media, capturing the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. The Leon County Humane Society received an overwhelming number of adoption requests, but ultimately, they chose Frank and Karla Spina. The couple had years of experience caring for bull terriers, making them the perfect fit for Trooper’s new home.
Frank and Karla were overjoyed to welcome the dog into their family. They already had another bull terrier named Dallas and considered their pets to be their children.
Trooper’s new life seemed like a happy ending to his tragic past, but just two weeks after his adoption, the Spinas discovered small lumps on his left side. Concerned, they took him to the veterinarian, hoping it was nothing serious.

Their worst fears were confirmed. The doctor diagnosed dog with mast cell tumors—cancerous growths that required immediate removal.
The news was devastating for the Spinas, who had already witnessed dog endure so much. Frank described their reaction as a complete meltdown, struggling to process the idea that their beloved pet, who had just escaped death, was now facing another life-threatening battle.
Despite the grim diagnosis, Trooper’s fighting spirit never wavered. The veterinarian performed surgery to remove the cancer, but during the procedure, they discovered another alarming issue.
Dog had ingested a freezer bag weighing over two pounds, filled with around 110 to 120 pieces of trash, including metal and rubber. It was shocking to realize that Trooper had been so starved before his rescue that he had eaten anything he could find, even dangerous objects.

Trooper’s condition required an urgent four-hour surgery to remove the foreign objects from his stomach. The procedure was risky, but the medical team was determined to give him a chance at a healthy life. Miraculously, the surgery was a success. Trooper’s recovery was slow but steady, and with the support of Frank and Karla, he regained his strength.
It was clear that Trooper had been deeply neglected before his rescue. His previous owner, Giovanny Garcia, had abandoned him in the most heartless way, leaving him to die in a hurricane.
Investigators later arrested Garcia, charging him with aggravated animal cruelty, a third-degree felony. In his defense, Garcia claimed he had no other option, saying he couldn’t find anyone to take the dog. However, his excuse did little to justify his actions, and his next court hearing is scheduled for March.
