21-Year-Old Jacorey High Fights Off Shark to Save Pregnant Fiancée Morgan Mims

A vacation along Florida’s coastline turned into a terrifying fight for survival when 21-year-old Jacorey High risked his own life to protect his pregnant fiancée, Morgan Mims, during a shark attack. What began as a relaxing afternoon in the waters of Daytona Beach Shores quickly became a life-or-death situation after a shark suddenly attacked High while the couple was swimming together.

Despite suffering severe injuries, his immediate concern was not his own safety but ensuring that Morgan, who is expecting their first child, made it safely back to shore. His courageous actions have drawn widespread attention, highlighting both the dangers of unexpected shark encounters and the instinctive determination of a man protecting his family.

A Peaceful Beach Vacation Turns Into a Nightmare

Jacorey High and Morgan Mims had traveled from McDonough, Georgia, to Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, for what was supposed to be a joyful weeklong vacation. The trip was especially meaningful because the couple was celebrating the upcoming arrival of their first child. Like countless visitors who flock to Florida’s beaches every year, they entered the shallow waters expecting nothing more than a relaxing afternoon by the ocean.

The couple was swimming in waist-deep water near the Dunlawton Avenue beach approach at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday when the attack occurred without warning. High later explained that he never saw the shark approaching. Within moments, the predator clamped onto his left leg, shocking him before he even realized what had happened.

Instead of focusing on the pain or panic that naturally accompanies such an attack, High’s first instinct was to protect Morgan. Knowing she was pregnant and vulnerable, he immediately pushed her toward the shoreline while the shark continued attacking him. According to his own account, his only thought at that moment was getting her away from the danger before worrying about himself.

Beach officials later confirmed that the shark bit High twice in rapid succession. Even after the initial bites, the ordeal was far from over. The shark continued circling and repeatedly lunged toward him as he desperately tried to escape from the water. High described the shark as being around four feet long with a grey upper body. Although relatively small compared to many shark species found in Florida waters, the animal proved capable of inflicting devastating injuries. During the attack, High realized he would have to physically fight back if he hoped to survive.

According to the incident report from Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue, High punched the shark in the nose. The strike forced the animal to release its grip, allowing him a brief opportunity to continue moving toward the shore. However, the shark was not finished.

As High later recalled, after freeing his foot, the shark immediately lunged toward his arm. He managed to push it away before continuing his escape. While running through the shallow water toward land, the shark attempted another attack aimed at his other leg. Every step toward the beach became a desperate race against a determined predator. Only after seeing Morgan safely standing on the sand did High begin thinking about his own injuries. His focus shifted from protecting his fiancée to simply surviving long enough to reach help.

Severe Injuries Lead to Surgery and a Long Recovery

Although adrenaline helped carry High through the attack, the true extent of his injuries did not become clear until he reached safety. He managed to make his way to a nearby lifeguard tower before collapsing. Looking down at his foot, he finally saw blood pouring from the devastating wounds caused by the shark’s powerful bite. High later explained that he immediately knew the injuries had been caused by a shark because of the force with which the animal had bitten his foot. Despite recognizing the danger, he said concern for Morgan had completely overshadowed any fear for himself during the attack.

Emergency responders transported him to Halifax Health Medical Center, where doctors quickly assessed the damage. The shark’s bite had caused extensive injuries involving ligaments, tendons, and soft tissue in his left foot and ankle. According to High, the attack tore through the ligaments and tendons extending from the upper portion of his left ankle down toward the middle of the bottom of his foot. Such injuries are particularly serious because tendons and ligaments play essential roles in walking, balance, and mobility. Damage to these structures often requires surgical repair followed by lengthy rehabilitation.

Doctors performed surgery to repair the extensive tissue damage. While the operation was successful enough to allow him to leave the hospital a few days later, medical professionals warned him that recovery would be a long process rather than a quick return to normal life. High was discharged on Monday afternoon and began the journey back home to McDonough, Georgia. Physicians informed him that his recovery would likely take at least three months, during which time he would be unable to return to his physically demanding occupation.

His job involves laying gas lines, work that requires standing, walking, climbing, lifting heavy equipment, and maintaining balance over uneven terrain. Because of the severe damage to his foot, returning to those responsibilities anytime soon is impossible. High expressed hope that the injuries would not permanently affect his ability to work. His greatest concern now extends beyond healing from surgery. As someone preparing to become a father, regaining full mobility and returning to employment are critical priorities for supporting his growing family.

He also explained that much of the pain was masked by adrenaline immediately after the attack. It was only after reaching the hospital and receiving medical treatment that the reality of his injuries truly began to set in. Like many trauma victims, the initial survival instinct temporarily overpowered the physical pain, allowing him to continue fighting until he reached safety.

Support From the Public as Experts Highlight Shark Attack Statistics

The shark attack has not only drawn attention because of its dramatic circumstances but also because of High’s willingness to place himself in danger to save his pregnant fiancée. His repeated statements following the incident have reflected the same mindset he displayed during the attack. High has consistently said he has no regrets about his actions. In his view, protecting Morgan was the only priority that mattered. He explained that she is the person he loves most, and ensuring her safety was more important to him than avoiding injury himself.

With months of recovery ahead and an inability to work, High now faces significant financial challenges in addition to his medical rehabilitation. Hospital treatment, surgery, follow-up appointments, physical therapy, and everyday living expenses are expected to place considerable strain on the young family during a period when they are also preparing for the birth of their first child.

To help manage these costs, High launched a GoFundMe campaign with a fundraising goal of $100,000. The campaign is intended to cover medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and basic living needs while he remains unable to return to work. By Tuesday morning, donations had reached approximately $1,300, with supporters contributing to assist him during his recovery.

The incident has also renewed discussion about shark encounters along Florida’s coastline. While shark attacks often receive widespread media attention, marine experts emphasize that unprovoked attacks remain relatively uncommon. According to specialists at the Georgia Aquarium, only around 60 to 65 unprovoked shark encounters occur worldwide each year, making such incidents statistically rare considering the millions of people who enter the ocean annually.

Even so, Florida consistently records more shark bites than any other U.S. state. Warm coastal waters, abundant marine life, and the enormous number of swimmers, surfers, and beach visitors combine to create more opportunities for interactions between humans and sharks.

Within Florida, Volusia County has long been recognized as one of the areas reporting the highest number of shark bites. Data from the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File showed that the county accounted for more than half of Florida’s unprovoked shark bite incidents during 2025. Most encounters involve smaller shark species and result in non-fatal injuries, but incidents like High’s demonstrate how quickly a routine swim can become dangerous.

Authorities continue encouraging beachgoers to remain aware of ocean conditions, follow lifeguard instructions, avoid swimming near schools of fish, and leave the water immediately if sharks are spotted nearby. While such precautions reduce risk, experts continue to stress that serious shark attacks remain extremely uncommon.

For Jacorey High and Morgan Mims, however, the statistics offer little comfort after experiencing such a traumatic event firsthand. Their vacation transformed from a celebration of their growing family into an ordeal involving emergency surgery, months of rehabilitation, and financial uncertainty. Yet amid the physical injuries and emotional trauma, High’s actions ensured that Morgan escaped unharmed.

As he begins the long road to recovery, his focus remains on healing, returning to work, and preparing for fatherhood. His story has resonated with many people because it reflects not only remarkable courage under extraordinary circumstances but also the instinctive desire to protect a loved one regardless of the personal cost. While the scars from the shark attack may take months to heal, the decision he made in those critical moments—placing his pregnant fiancée’s safety ahead of his own—has become the defining moment of an unforgettable survival story.
